The Word of Wisdom:
Receiving God’s Strategy for the Next Step
Many believers desire direction from God. While the Lord guides us through Scripture, counsel, and spiritual maturity, He also gives supernatural direction through the word of wisdom.
Unlike the word of knowledge, which reveals facts, the word of wisdom reveals God’s solution, strategy, or course of action. It answers the question: “What should be done?”
Joseph demonstrated this gift after interpreting Pharaoh’s dream. The revelation about the coming famine was followed by God’s strategy: store grain during seven years of abundance to prepare for seven years of famine (Genesis 41). Daniel repeatedly received wisdom concerning kings and kingdoms because God not only revealed mysteries but also gave understanding of what they meant (Daniel 2).
In the New Testament, Paul experienced this gift as the Holy Spirit directed where he should—and should not—travel during his missionary journeys (Acts 16:6–10). The Spirit did more than provide information; He gave direction.
A word of wisdom often follows a word of knowledge. God first reveals the situation, then reveals His response to it.
This gift becomes especially valuable during seasons of uncertainty. Human wisdom analyzes circumstances from the ground. God’s wisdom sees from heaven.
James reminds us that heavenly wisdom is “pure, peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits” (James 3:17). Genuine words of wisdom reflect these qualities.
Common Misunderstandings
- A word of wisdom is not merely good advice.
- It is not accumulated life experience.
- It is not superior intelligence.
- It is God’s supernatural perspective for a particular situation.

WATCH: Is God revealing His strategy rather than simply information?
WEIGH: Does the direction agree with Scripture and produce the fruit of God’s wisdom?
WALK: Obey what the Lord has shown you, even when you cannot yet see the entire outcome.
God’s wisdom never leaves His children without hope. He not only reveals the path—He walks it with us.
