The Word of Knowledge:
When God Reveals What You Could Not Know
The Holy Spirit delights in revealing the Father’s heart, but He does so in different ways. One of those ways is through the word of knowledge, one of the nine gifts of the Spirit listed in 1 Corinthians 12:8.
A word of knowledge is a supernatural revelation of facts that a person could not know through natural means. It concerns something that already exists or has already occurred. It is not the result of research, intuition, education, or experience. Rather, it is a specific piece of information revealed by the Holy Spirit for God’s purposes.
Throughout Scripture, we see this gift operating repeatedly.
Jesus demonstrated the gift when He told the Samaritan woman details about her marital history that He had never been told (John 4:16–19). Peter exercised it when he discerned that Ananias and Sapphira had lied to the Holy Spirit (Acts 5:1–11). Elisha repeatedly knew the movements and plans of Israel’s enemies because God revealed them to him (2 Kings 6:8–12).
Notice that in each example, God revealed facts—not opinions.
Unfortunately, many believers confuse a word of knowledge with a strong impression, a suspicion, or even emotional discernment. The gift is not spiritual guesswork. Neither is it permission to expose people publicly. Biblical words of knowledge always serve God’s redemptive purposes.
The Holy Spirit reveals hidden things to bring healing, conviction, protection, encouragement, or confirmation. Sometimes He exposes sin so repentance can occur. Other times He reveals pain that no one else knows so a person experiences the Father’s compassion.
As believers, we should also remember that a word of knowledge is partial. Paul reminds us, “We know in part and we prophesy in part” (1 Corinthians 13:9). One revealed fact does not mean we possess the entire story. Humility must always accompany revelation.
Common Misunderstandings
- A word of knowledge is not fortune telling.
- It is not reading people’s minds.
- It is not based on intuition alone.
- It is not an excuse to embarrass or control others.

The purpose of the word of knowledge is never to elevate the messenger. It is to reveal that God knows His people completely and cares enough to intervene in their lives.
