Three Revelation Gifts, Three Different Purposes:
Word of Knowledge, Word of Wisdom and Discerning of Spirits
One of the most misunderstood groups of spiritual gifts is the revelatory gifts listed in 1 Corinthians 12. Although they often operate together, the word of knowledge, the word of wisdom, and discerning of spirits are distinct gifts with different purposes. Understanding these differences helps believers recognize how the Holy Spirit reveals truth and equips the Church for ministry.
The Word of Knowledge reveals supernatural facts that could not be known naturally. It concerns information about a present or past situation that God chooses to disclose. Jesus demonstrated this gift when He told the Samaritan woman details about her life that no one had shared with Him (John 4:16–19). Peter exercised it when he discerned the deception of Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1–11). The word of knowledge answers the question: “What does God want me to know?”
The Word of Wisdom reveals God’s perspective, strategy, or direction concerning a situation. While the word of knowledge reveals information, the word of wisdom reveals what should be done with that information. Joseph received wisdom from God to prepare Egypt for the coming famine (Genesis 41). Paul repeatedly received divine direction concerning his missionary journeys (Acts 16:6–10). The word of wisdom answers the question: “What does God want me to do?”
Discerning of Spirits is the supernatural ability to distinguish the spiritual source behind a person, message, or manifestation. It is not the gift of suspicion or fault-finding. Rather, it enables believers to recognize whether something is influenced by the Holy Spirit, the human spirit, or an unclean spirit. Paul discerned a spirit of divination operating in the slave girl at Philippi (Acts 16:16–18). Jesus frequently recognized demonic spirits that were hidden from everyone else. This gift answers the question: “What spirit is operating here?”
These gifts often work together. A word of knowledge may reveal hidden facts. Discerning of spirits identifies the spiritual influence involved. A word of wisdom then provides God’s direction for responding. Together they demonstrate God’s complete care for His people by revealing truth, exposing deception, and providing divine guidance.
As watchful believers, we are called to WATCH, WEIGH, and WALK. We watch for what the Holy Spirit is revealing, weigh every revelation against the written Word of God, and walk in faithful obedience to His leading. The revelatory gifts are not given to impress others but to glorify Christ, protect His Church, and equip His people to walk wisely in a world where truth and deception often stand side by side.
