The Gifts of Healings: Restoring What Sin Has Broken
Among the Power Gifts of the Holy Spirit, the gifts of healings beautifully reveal the compassion and restoring power of God. Unlike the other gifts in 1 Corinthians 12, this gift is expressed in the plural—“gifts of healings” (1 Corinthians 12:9). This wording reminds us that the Holy Spirit ministers healing in many ways, to many people, and for many different kinds of needs, all according to His sovereign will.
The gifts of healings are supernatural manifestations through which the Holy Spirit brings restoration to physical, emotional, or spiritual brokenness. They are not human abilities or techniques but divine works of grace that point people to Jesus Christ, the Great Physician.
Throughout the Gospels, Jesus demonstrated the Father’s heart by healing every kind of disease and infirmity. He opened blind eyes, restored hearing to the deaf, cleansed lepers, strengthened the lame, and delivered those oppressed by evil spirits. His miracles revealed not only God’s power but also His compassion for those who were suffering (Matthew 9:35–36).
The ministry of healing continued through the early Church. Peter declared healing to the man lame from birth at the Beautiful Gate of the Temple (Acts 3:1–10). Paul witnessed extraordinary healings as the gospel spread throughout the Roman world (Acts 19:11–12). James later instructed believers who were sick to call for the elders of the church to pray and anoint them with oil, demonstrating that prayer for healing remained an important ministry within the Body of Christ (James 5:14–16).
The gifts of healings remind us that sickness, disease, and brokenness were never part of God’s original creation. They entered the world through the Fall, but Christ came proclaiming the Kingdom of God—a Kingdom marked by restoration, mercy, and hope. While not every healing occurs in the timing or manner we desire, every healing points forward to the day when Christ will make all things new and there will be no more pain, sickness, or death (Revelation 21:4).
Common Misunderstandings
- The gifts of healings are not magical powers that belong to an individual.
- They are not evidence that one believer is more spiritual than another.
- They do not guarantee that every person prayed for will be healed immediately.
- They should never lead to condemnation or the assumption that someone lacks faith because healing has not yet occurred.
- They do not replace the value of physicians, medicine, or wise medical care, which God may also use as instruments of His healing grace.
Rather, the gifts of healings are sovereign manifestations of the Holy Spirit, given to glorify Christ, strengthen faith, and demonstrate the Father’s compassionate heart toward those who suffer.

WATCH: Remain attentive to the Holy Spirit’s prompting when you encounter someone who is sick, wounded, or burdened. Watch not only for physical illness but also for emotional scars, spiritual oppression, and broken relationships where God’s healing presence may be needed.
WEIGH: Test every testimony, ministry practice, and healing claim against the Word of God. Does it exalt Jesus Christ? Does it demonstrate humility, compassion, and biblical integrity? Genuine healing ministry directs people’s faith toward the Great Physician rather than toward the individual through whom He works. It also recognizes that God’s timing and methods belong to Him alone.
WALK: Step forward in obedient faith by praying for the sick with compassion, humility, and confidence in God’s goodness. Leave the results in His sovereign hands, trusting that He always accomplishes His perfect will. Whether He heals instantly, gradually, through medical treatment, or ultimately in His eternal Kingdom, continue to reflect His love and encourage others to place their hope in Christ. Faithfulness is measured not by the outcome we witness, but by our willingness to obey the Holy Spirit and faithfully minister His grace.
The gifts of healings remind us that God’s heart has always been to restore what sin has broken. Every healing—whether dramatic or quiet, immediate or progressive—is a testimony to His mercy and a glimpse of the coming Kingdom, where Christ will reign in perfect wholeness. Until that day, the Holy Spirit continues to minister healing as a sign of God’s compassion, an expression of His power, and a witness to the saving work of Jesus Christ. Through the gifts of healings, the Church proclaims not only that God can heal, but that God is still restoring lives today.
