🔥DAY 1 — AWAKEN
Before We Return, We Must Wake Up.
August 13, 2026 • 30 Av 5786
“Return to Me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.”
— Joel 2:12
There is a difference between being awake and being alert.
We can be physically awake and still spiritually drowsy.
We can hear words without really listening.
See things without truly perceiving.
Move through routines without noticing what has been happening in our hearts.
And sometimes, before God calls us to change direction, He first calls us to wake up.
That is where this journey begins.
AWAKEN.
Not awaken to fear.
Not awaken to speculation.
Not awaken to everything happening around us.
Awaken to God.
Joel’s call is not merely an invitation to perform religious activity. It is a call to return with the whole heart.
That means this journey begins deeper than what we will eat, what we will abstain from, or how many hours we will pray.
It begins with a question:
What has gone quiet in me that God wants to awaken?
Perhaps it is hunger for His Word.
Perhaps it is desire for prayer.
Perhaps it is conviction.
Perhaps it is obedience.
Perhaps it is the willingness to hear something you have been avoiding.
Perhaps it is simply the realization that you have been moving—but not necessarily moving with God.
The purpose of fasting is not to make God pay attention to us.
It is to make room for us to pay attention to Him.
The 40 Days of Fasting & Prayer guide describes fasting broadly: food may be involved, but so may surrendering noise, comforts, habits, media, or distractions. The goal is to make room for repentance, attention, obedience, and prayer.
So today, don’t begin by trying to prove how disciplined you can be.
Begin by becoming available.
👁️ WATCH
What am I noticing?
What has been stirring in me?
What have I been ignoring?
Where have I become spiritually dull, distracted, hurried, or overly familiar?
Don’t rush to interpret everything.
Just watch.
⚖️ WEIGH
What needs examination?
Is my desire for God wholehearted—or merely situational?
Am I seeking His hand, or His heart?
What has been competing with my attention?
What noise needs to become quiet enough for me to hear clearly?
Remember:
Everything spiritual must be weighed—not merely felt.
🚶🏽 WALK
What does returning look like today?
Choose your fast.
Set your prayer time.
Make the appointment with God.
Then keep it.
Not because a ritual earns His attention, but because you are intentionally making room to give your attention to Him.
🙏🏽 DAY 1 PRAYER
Father, awaken me.
Awaken what has grown sleepy.
Awaken what has become distracted.
Awaken holy desire within me.
Turn my heart toward You again.
Where I have been comfortable, make me attentive.
Where I have been distracted, make me focused.
Where I have been resistant, make me teachable.
Where I have been distant, draw me near.
Teach me to fast with wisdom,
to pray with sincerity,
to listen without rushing,
and to return with my whole heart.
I don’t want merely to complete forty days.
I want to encounter You in the returning.
Awaken me, Lord.
And teach me how to watch.
Amen.

🔥 DAY 1 REMINDER
Don’t confuse activity with awakening.
The journey begins when the heart turns.
WATCH what He is stirring.
WEIGH what you are hearing.
WALK in what He makes clear.
