Three Utterance (Vocal ) Gifts, Three Different Purposes:
Prophecy, Different Kinds of Tongues and Interpretation of Tongues
Among the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit, the utterance gifts (also referred to as the vocal or inspirational gifts) are those that communicate through inspired speech. While they all involve speaking, prophecy, different kinds of tongues, and interpretation of tongues serve distinct purposes in the life of the believer and the Church. Understanding these differences helps us appreciate how the Holy Spirit builds up the Body of Christ through spoken ministry.
Prophecy is the supernatural ability to speak a message inspired by the Holy Spirit in a language understood by the hearers. According to 1 Corinthians 14:3, the primary purpose of prophecy is to bring edification, exhortation, and comfort. At times, prophecy may also include warning, correction, encouragement, or confirmation, but it always points people toward Christ and must be tested by Scripture. Prophecy answers the question: “What is God saying to His people?”
Different Kinds of Tongues is the supernatural ability to speak in a language the speaker has not learned naturally, as the Holy Spirit gives utterance. In personal prayer, speaking in tongues edifies the believer (1 Corinthians 14:4). In a corporate gathering, however, a public message in tongues is intended to benefit the entire congregation when accompanied by interpretation. This gift demonstrates that the Holy Spirit can speak beyond the limits of human understanding. It answers the question: “What is the Spirit expressing through supernatural utterance?”
Interpretation of Tongues is the supernatural ability to communicate the meaning of a message given in tongues. It is not a word-for-word translation but a Spirit-given interpretation that conveys the intended message. When exercised alongside a public message in tongues, the Church receives encouragement, instruction, or exhortation, just as it would through prophecy (1 Corinthians 14:5, 13, 27–28). This gift answers the question: “What is the Holy Spirit communicating through this message?”
These gifts often work together. A believer may deliver a message in tongues, another may receive the interpretation, and the congregation is strengthened through the Holy Spirit’s communication. Prophecy may stand alone, while tongues given publicly are intended to be accompanied by interpretation so that all may understand and be edified.
As watchful believers, we are called to WATCH, WEIGH, and WALK. We watch for the Holy Spirit’s leading, weigh every spoken message against the written Word of God, and walk in obedience to what the Lord reveals. The utterance gifts are not given to draw attention to the speaker but to glorify Jesus Christ, strengthen His Church, and remind us that the Holy Spirit still speaks to His people today.
Whether through prophecy, tongues, or interpretation, every inspired utterance should lead God’s people to greater faith, deeper obedience, and a clearer vision of Christ. When exercised in love and according to the order outlined in Scripture, the utterance gifts become powerful instruments for encouraging the Church and proclaiming the greatness of God.
